Course content
Content of lectures: 1. Introduction The characteristic of main groups of parasitic helminths. Significance of helminths and the methods of helminthology. Terminology. 2. Adaptations of helminths to parasitism. 3. The functional morphology of helminths. 4. The Helminths reproduction and development. The types of life cycles. Morphological and physiological adaptations of developmental stages. 5. The ecologie of helminths. Host-parasite interactions, pathology, host specificity. Abiotic and biotic factors, the ecology of communities. 6. Phylogeny and classification of helminths. 7. An overview of the main groups of parasitic helminths. Trematoda, Monogenea, Cestoda, Acanthocephala, Nematoda. 8. Medically and economically important helminths. Content of practices: 1. Microscopy techniques in helminths research. 2. Permanent slides, staining. 3. The main groups of helminths. 4. Monogenea - methods of study and determination. 5. Digenea I. 6. Digenea II. 7. Cestoda. 8. Acanthocephala. 9. Nematoda. 10. Dissection of fish. 11. Field excursion. 12. Mollusca as intermediate hosts of digeneans - methods of study and the morphology of cercaria. 13. Electron microscopy - the study o surface structure and ultrastructure.
