Course content
Lectures (2 hours a week) 1. Comparison of social services from the perspective of level of health care. 2. The concept of integrated care. 3. Basic principles of providing health and social care. 4. Assistive devices as a means of improving the quality of life in the context of health and social care. 5. Evaluation of quality of provided care and its limits. 6. Use of community approach in long-term planning of health and social care. 7. Modern trends in the providing of health and social care. 8. Social inequalities in health and the issue of equity. 9. The health care system in the Czech Republic, the method of financing health care . 10. Long-term care providers, their characteristics, rights, obligations, persons requiring long-term care , the process of granting the status of the client in long-term care, financing. 11. Human needs (in general) - Maslow's hierarchy. Sick people and their needs, the basic rating scales. 12. Long-term care clients and their needs in relation to their degree of dependence. 13. Providers of inpatient/residential long-term care - nursing workplaces in hospitals and social beds in health facilities, specialized medical centers and other inpatient facilities, hospices. 14. Community care - definition, purpose, structure within the public health, status and role of nurses in community care based on WHO recommendations. Healthy community - factors influencing health of community. Characteristics of a complex home care. Seminars ( 1 hour a week ) 1. Interconnection and continuity of health and social care in selected social services. 2. The issue of complex and coordinated care for selected target groups. 3. Examples of the application of the model "person-centered care" in health and social care facilities. 4. A comprehensive approach to selecting and funding of assistive devices for the disabled. 5. Problem areas of fulfillment of quality standards - dilemmas from the perspective of a social worker. 6. Possibility of participation of users and carers in the planning and providing of health and social care. 7. Model examples of the application of alternative services in the health and social care. 8. Operationalization of basic concepts: the definition of long-term care and its clients, providers of long-term care, social and health care, shared care, community nurse. 9. Current and future need for long term care and its financing, the difference between acute and long-term care, resources of health and social public expenditure. 10. Evaluation of social needs of the client and assessment of the health of the client, the commission for the assessment of long-term care. 11. The shortcomings of today's system of financing of long-term care. 12. Clients in long-term care residing in health facilities in the present time. 13. Providing and financing of long-term care . 14. Introduction and scope of community nurses.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the issue of long-term health and social care.
The graduates should be able after completing this course: - to map health and social character of long-term care - to define clients of long-term care and its providers - to map the environment for long-term care and to assess client?s needs of that care - to describe the method of financing of long-term care according to the principle of social solidarity.
Prerequisites
The student has basic knowledge acquired during bachelor study.

Assessment methods and criteria
Didactic test

Participation in seminars at least 90 %, activity, preparation and presentation of the essay, knowledge of the given topic.
